This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum.

Detail

To commemorate this milestone, we are honored to present the special performance "Seeking the Field", featuring Min Tanaka, Rin Ishihara, Hirokazu Taniguchi, and Marihiko Hara, over three days from October 16-18, 2026.
Created exclusively for the Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum, this special performance brings together internationally acclaimed dancer Min Tanaka, renowned for his singular artistic expression-often described as "the unnameable dance"-with distinguished fellow performers and members of the creative team active both in Japan and abroad.
How will Tanaka respond to the history and spirit of Takayama, and to the memories and traces of everyday life accumulated within the Kusakabe House, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property?
How will he give physical expression to what he perceives?
And how might it awaken the primordial memories that lie quietly within each person who witnesses it?
This will be a truly one-of-a-kind performance-an experience that can exist only in this place, at this particular moment.
For those with an interest in dance-especially Min Tanaka's singular physical expression-as well as Japanese culture, architecture, and the arts, we warmly invite you to visit Takayama and experience this extraordinary performance.
We would be deeply honored to welcome you to the Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum and to share this special moment with you.

Festival at Kusakabe Family

In Takayama, the Doll Festival is celebrated on April 3rd -- a month behind other regions.

Many of the Hina dolls conserved by the Kusakabes were brought in for generations as trousseaux of those who married into the heads of family, and some of the boxes for the dolls have inscriptions of the names of the historical brides. Enjoy fully the magnificent collection of Hina dolls, handed down generations.
